Being a clerk
I am a clerk. To typical (read: non legal world) people, this might mean that I am something on a spectrum ranging from a secretary to a themselves manning a cash register. When people ask me what it means to be a clerk, after overcoming the outshine of my present place in the world, I meet their eyes and give them the paradigm lawyer answer to pretty much every question: that depends. You see, it depends on honourable what kind of clerk we are talking about here. In the legal profession, the rates b standing is used to describe a bunch of different jobs. Briefly, there’s the chief clerk (premier of the courthouse and of all things managerial and administrative), the deputy chief clerk (in our courthouse, this is the guy who deals with personnel issues – I am not effective if this is standard or just how it worked out here – and does the chief clerk’s job when he is not around), the associated clerks (the folks that handle a specific calendar in court on a preordained day each week, and pretty much nothing else), the law clerk (the dude that researches and writes judges’ opinions – my old job), the work clerks (this is the secretary / cash register person and the only ones without law degrees in the company) and the temporary assistant clerks, or TACs (that would be yours truly). So when I say that I am a clerk, it doesn’t unquestionably mean anything. Long story short, I do a little bit of everything.
I come up with that telling the story of how I’m not actually doing the work for which I trained in ready is an idea that has been played out (i.e., ironically, the movie Clerks – I’m not even reputed to be here today). Almost everyone I know these days is in a job where they do something other than what they had envisioned as students. I small, really, how many comm majors from the last decade or so actually have jobs in portable radio, tv or film like they had wanted? Selecting the Right Respondents for your Survey (Setting your Quotas)
Not all respondents are created match. It’s true. Just because you can convince someone to take your survey doesn’t want you necessarily want them to take your survey. In fact, ensuring that the real respondents take your survey (in the right proportions) is probably among the most grave things you can do to ensure that you finish your project with survey results that you can use.
I’ll give you an pattern: We once conducted a survey about a concert series we host each come from to try to find out what kind of music our guests wanted to hear. When we go the results back, we were surprised to find that, more than anything else, our visitors wanted to pay attention to to 80s music. By a big margin too.
Fine by me — there is a lot of 80s music that I like. But it seemed a trifling funny. So we ran a few cross-tabs, looked at some other variables, and found that a disparate number of our respondents were between 35-44 years old. Given that scrutinization has shown that people tend to be attached to the music they listened to as teenagers, is it so surprising that 80s music was so well-received among a bunch of 35-44 year olds? After weighting the evidence to match attendance at the event, other forms of music, including pop, bankrupt, and a couple of other genres jumped to the front.
Imagine if we had just sent our review to a bunch of 15-18 year olds. Or if we had sent it to women over 65 years old. Or if we had righteous sent it to respondents in Mexico.
First rule of survey dig into: make sure your survey people who represent your customers.
Girl Friday role of survey research: make sure you inquiry them in the right proportion to your customer base.
I’m guessing the the argument for these two rules is fairly straightforward. If you don’t survey the proper people in the right proportion, how will you know if your results cogitate about the behavior and attitudes of all of your customers (or the specific group of customers you are infuriating to understand)? If the people you survey aren’t Congressman of the people you’re making decisions about, there is very much the possibility that in conducting your scanning you could be doing more harm than good. Its as if, in the example above, we got the results of our examination and then went about featuring 80s bands at all of our concerts. Nobody would come. We’d waste tons of money. And we’d assume that the research must have been stained.
