Sticky tape generates X-rays

Christmas could fetch with it a new hazard as you wrap your gifts – X-ray-emitting gooey tape.

Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, have shown that merely peeling ordinary sticky tape in a vacuum can mould enough X-rays to take an image — of one of the scientists’ own fingers (see videos).

“At some appropriate we were a little bit scared,” says Juan Escobar, a colleague of the research team. But he and his co-workers soon realized that the X-rays were only emitted when the kit was inured to in a vacuum. “We don’t want to scare people from using Scotch belt in everyday life,” Escobar adds.

This compassionate of energy release — known as triboluminescence and seen in the style of light — occurs whenever a solid (often a crystal) is crushed, rubbed or scratched. It is a large-known, if somewhat mysterious, phenomenon, seen by Francis Bacon in 1605. He noticed that scratching a mix of sugar caused it to give off light.

The leading explanation posits that when a crystal is crushed or split, the method separates opposite charges. When these charges are neutralized, they unloose a burst of energy in the form of light.

As long ago as 1953, a set of scientists based in Russia suggested that peeling viscid tape produced X-rays. But “we were very sceptical about the old results,” says Escobar. His cooperate decided to look into the phenomenon anyway, and found that X-rays were indeed given off, in great-energy pulses.

When the researchers placed a small inexperienced window in their vacuum chamber, they were even able to take an X-ray image of a digit be, using a dental X-ray detector. Their results are published in Nature1

“Of the total electron discharges, only one in ten thousand makes X-rays,” says Escobar. The energies of the individual X-ray pulses, typically a few nanoseconds covet, are about 15 kiloelectron volts.

Sticky-Tape X-Rays

Now this is effective to sound weird but unpeeling sticky tape produces X-rays. A categorize of science geeks at UCLA have built a machine for unpeeling humid-tape in a vacuum at the rate of about 5 centimeters per second for the swift purpose of generating x-rays. Now it’s not a lot of x-rays or very solid ones. In the picture above the X-rays produce a shadow of a tinker on dental X-ray film. Now what they need to do is ditch that 1/2 inch desk record and step up to something like 3 inch packing tape bet they would get whopping amounts of x-rays out of that. The weird thing is that they are getting more force out of the tape then the math says they should. So they are looking for a better acquaintance of just what is happening.
