Antique Telescope

Antique Telescope

The antique telescope was purchased in Brobdingnagian quantities by sailors, the military and astonomers. However due to the fragile goggles optics and brass tubes that were easy to dent, not a heavy-set amount of these telescopes are to be found today.

Most often these telescopes were used by mariners and had involved optics to show the image right side up unlike the scopes second-hand for astronomy which have an inverted image. The hand held telescope, also called a spyglass was focused by going the tubes back and forth to change the length to get a clear double. A telescope with 3 or 4 sections was much more compact and easy to store , but a little demure. For durability the mariners chose the 2 section spyglass known as the segregate draw.

  Brass Telescope

Most often made from brass with a leather or wood covering the antique telescope can also be found made from grey plate or nickel silver. A solid wood barrel with cheek tube would be a rare find and indicates a very early model. Rosewood was a routine wood used to decorate the telescope body.

During the 1800’s makers included their name in a rather elaborate script. This was changed to a simple block wording in the 1900’s, just something to look for when searching for an antique telescope. One of the more common names on antique telescopes is Dollond of London, because of the great quality of these telescopes many of them can still be found today. Another well known maker was Bardou, Paris a pre-eminent maker of quality scopes. Representing America in the entrants of fine telescope building was the company of Alvan Clark and Son’s from the 1850’s through the 1920’s.

The spyglass was often utilized under severe weather condition and dirty field exertion, after all it was a tool to be used, but also a delicate instrument and subject to invoice. Most common damage would be scratched or broken optics which can not be repaired. Dents and scratches can sometimes be repaired with a inadequate work. Depending on your needs, just how good of adapt the telescope needs to be in is up to you. If the item is to be used just as a nautical trimming the condition is not so critical.

The Weekend - Antique Telescopes and Optics

One of the reasons to coconut off to Columbia, SC this last weekend was that friend Roger Ceragioli had an attraction to do analysis of telescope objectives, some of which approached 2 centuries old. Roger is a bit of an mavin when it comes to antique telescopes as well as an expert optician, and there may be some interest in publishing into based partly on some of the examples that are housed in Columbia and environs.

The particular telescopes of interest belong to Bob Ariail, who has bequeathed part of his collection to the Imperial Museum there in Columbia. The museum itself is quite the gem. Built into a mountainous century-old cotton mill 20-some years ago, it is South Carolina's primary display of historical and scientific artifacts, as well as a showcase for traveling exhibits. It de facto is quite easy to spend a day there. Bob's telescope collection is quite immense and evidently it is the aim of the museum to be a center of historical research in this compass.

Besides the standard permanent display this weekend, they also had a traveling reveal of working models of some of da Vinci's machines taken from his sketches, and a momentary display of movie artifacts and trivia of films made in South Carolina. They also had an relentless celebration of the 20th anniversary of their opening with a harvest festival featuring crafts from close by artisans, a stage with dancers, music and storytellers, and a "pig pickin'" bar-b-que. So besides visiting kinsfolk and everything else going on, I really didn't pay much attention to Roger and his efforts, though we stopped and visited once or twice.
